Dip in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Introduction

The Diploma in TESOL is one of the most internationally recognised qualifications in EFL for trainees who have an interest in pursuing a career in the teaching of English. This is a taught programme of 120 hours, combining a high level of theory with a range of opportunities to demonstrate your competence as a teacher. It combines academic study, practicum teaching and teaching management. It also provides you with the proper tools needed to help you embark on your career as an English teacher or, for experience teachers; it gives you the chance to enhance your teaching skills and to obtain a recognised qualification for career advancement.

To meet the needs of all our trainees, the Diploma course is conducted on a part-time and full-time basis. The part-time course is intended for working adults where a daily study programme is not possible. The full-time intensive course is designed for trainees who are able to attend an intensive three times a week, full-time programme on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The full-time intensive course is specially structured and classes are delivered to ensure that our trainees are given the opportunity to absorb the contents effectively.

What you’ll bring home with you…

Module 1 – Language Theory

In the first module, you will be introduced to the different ways in which we learn a language. The module will cover the principles of language teaching and the different learning needs and styles of students.

Module 2 – Language Teaching Methodology

Here, you will learn how to apply the different language teaching methodologies and approaches for different courses. You will also be exposed to a variety of teaching materials and aids that are important for you to carry out an effective teaching plan.

Module 3 – Linguistics & Language Teaching

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of the main phonological, lexical and syntactic features of contemporary English. The different terms and definitions needed to teach the language effectively will be covered in this module.

Module 4 – Classroom Planning and Organization

Module 4 introduces you to the various learning needs of individuals and groups of learners. You will be taught on how to design a range of lesson plans, with clear and achievable aims based on the needs and learning styles of different groups of learners. Classroom management, evaluation of teaching materials, methodologies in engaging the interests of the learners, and establishing rapport with them are part of this module teaching.

Module 5 – Practicum

Practical teaching techniques and regular practical teachings are integrated throughout the lessons. You will have more than one chance to present a practical teaching session. At the final session, you will have to prepare a lesson plan and present your lesson to the entire class. Your trainer will set up a classroom environment and you will be required to teach the audience a lesson you have designed. This will form part of your final Practicum Assessment grading.

Module 6 – Writing Techniques It is important for an English teacher to be able to write and teach the different styles of writing. In this additional module, you will be taught the various styles of writings. These include Descriptive Writing, Narrative Writing, Report Writing, Expository Compositions, Creative Writing and Summary Writing techniques.

Assessment Prior and After the Course

  • Prior to the admission of every learner, you are required to undergo a written English proficiency test and an interview with our trainer to access your ability to write and speak English fluently. Upon the completion of the proficiency test, you will then be offered a placement into the course.
  • As part of the course, you will be required to complete a Final Course Assignments. The assignments are set by the London Teacher Training College (UK) as well as a practicum assessment set by our partner, Impart Learning Pte Ltd. The assignments are open book assessment and it will be marked and graded by two examiners in UK. All learners are required to complete the final assignments and practicum within two weeks from the end of the course.

Academic Qualifications to be Awarded

  • The Diploma in TESOL will be awarded by the London Teacher Training College, United Kingdom
